Kitchen designs have come a long way, from the old oak style kitchens with a big washing sink in the middle, the old style boiler in the corner, and the big range in the middle of the wall, todays kitchens are light and have plenty of room, instead of being small, cramped, and dark corners of the house.
It is fair to say that the kitchen plays a far more important role in the house of today than it has done in the past, it is no longer a room that is used periodically through the day to cook in, it is a functional room where more and more families and couples relax and unwind, and socialise together at the end of the day.
It would probably have been unthinkable in the past to have things like televisions in a kitchen, but today you won’t just find a tv in there, you might have your computer, or sit at the kitchen table with your laptop, have a nice coffee machine, or a host of other useful machines and tools to make your life easier.
The kitchen island is one of the better innovations of kitchen design, allowing the pots and pans to be kept out of the way in a central location, providing a surface for preparing meals, and acting as a table or breakfast bar for the family to sit around.
A nice kitchen island also really sets a kitchen apart, allowing ample room to move around the kitchen, and making use of space in the center of the room that would otherwise be dead space.
An island is today as much a part of a great kitchen design as the range was a 100 years ago.
